One does have to wonder how old it is with its amazing trunk. I notice in the last photo that it is beginning to creep over to the building on the left...time to get out the pruners.
It's really difficult to judge how old it is. It obviously has some years on it, but it's one of those things that could be way younger or way older than you would guess. The building next door is modern, housing the bank, and I've no doubt they don't approve of encroaching wisteria.
That twist is very French I feel -- keeping nature under control. I've seen fruit trees twisted like this too, to keep their branches lower for easier picking I think.
