Pussycat Flats Racecourse

The Pussycat Flats Racecourse hosts the Pine Creek Cup in May. In the centre of the track are some very fine cathedral termite nests. They provide homes for the thousands of termites that built them obviously, but also for the rare Hooded Parrot. I'm sure the racetrack is visited by more birdwatchers than racegoers and Pine Creek is famous as having the most bird species recorded in the Northern Territory. It may be in the middle of nowhere, but birdwatchers can't resist a site like that.

I have no idea how the place got its name.

middle of nowhere's good for birds...
unless it is a rare vagrant....
then the birders are outnumbered by the "twit"chers...
environmental damage is caused...
"Twit"chers do not give a damn about where they walk, clamber, trample....
they have just got to get a sight of the bird so that they can tick it off on their life list!!
They know nought about the life-cycle of the bird...
they are the same as "beer-tickers" and certain "trainspotters"....
train enthusiasts do keep lists I believe...
beer drinkers keep taste notes [I've got some old diaries with those in]
birders do keep a "Life-list" and records of the day...
but all the above know about their hobbies...
tickers of any kind are just that...
tick, tick, tick!!
Probably frustrated accountants or stores keepers!!

I imagine Pine Creek / Pussycat Flats gets its fair share of twitchers, but things like the Hooded Parrot are fairly reliable there. I've seen them for goodness sake and I'm not even a birdwatcher (I was taken there by my family though, who are all birders to a wo(man).
