I think something larger... and four-footed.... has been scrabbling at the rotten wood... trying to get at grubs... it is what rotten-hearted willows are for! And the willow will survive... if it can keep its balance in a strong wind.... if not, it will contuinue growing and put down roots whereever the top lands... unless, of course, someone removes it for "Elf & Safe-T" reasons... or to be "tidy"!!
Nice spot... judging by the destruction... I'd hazard a guess at a badger. Tim

that resembles a penguin?
I reckon a coypu or that European type beaver Castor something or other creature that lives hereabouts....
