Claudette and Calder in Saché
While we were in Saché last Monday with clients we were approaced by a local, who first admired the car (natch) and then said (in French, also natch) "So you've come to see the Calder?". Apparently Calder was well known in the village and they were drinking companions. The clients were most impressed with the way riding in a classic car broke the ice, and we were interested to learn more about the famous American artist who chose to live and work in a small French town.

Honoré de Balzac, the famous French writer, wrote several of his novels at the lovely château de Saché, which was owned by a friend of his, not far from the Calder's mobile.
The relationship of Balzac to Jean Margonne, the owner of 'chateau' of Saché was more complicated than just 'friends'. Margonne was certainly a friend of Balzac's mother, and fathered a child by her.
