Globally, with 1700 species, there are more species of sweat bees Lasioglossum sp than in any other bee genus. They are mainly solitary bees, although many species gather together in colonies and nest close to one another. This one that I photographed in a garden in Charente-Maritime in June is a fairly typical looking example of the genus, but they can vary considerably in appearance, just as they do in behaviour.
They are valuable pollinators of cultivated and wild plants. This one is on fennel.
