Staddle Stones

I photographed these traditional alpine barns in Switzerland from the car on our way home.

They sit raised up on staddle stones to keep the contents of the building (traditionally hay or grain) dry and rodent free. Access is by ladder, which in the old days would have been carefully removed to prevents rats using it as a climbing frame. Underneath there is space to keep livestock, usually a few cows.
