The Donjon (castle keep) on the Royal Citadel of Loches - built by the Count of Anjou, Foulques Nerra, along with Langeais, at the beginning of the 11th century. They were the first stone built castles in the world, and Loches is still the tallest castle keep, at 36 m high.

The cylindrical “Donjon” at Coucy-le-Château, in the Aisne department, was almost twice as tall [65 m]. It was blown up by the retreating German troops in 1917 just for the fun of it.
