Gumleaf Grasshoppers Goniaea spp are called that because they are generally found on the ground, pretending to be a dead gumleaf. This one I photographed at Iluka on the New South Wales coast was posing in a Melaleuca for some reason. They occur all over Australia, but are much more commonly recorded in southern and eastern coastal areas. That may well reflect the distribution of grasshopper surveyors rather than the grasshopper itself though.
