A New Charcuterie for Preuilly sur Claise

After the sad closure of our charcuterie in January this year it looked like the main street might be really going into decline. Thierry the Butcher was very worried he'd be left all alone and isolated. Luckily a young local couple, Aubin Gatault and Clemence Brejard, have bought the charcuterie business and after some setbacks (the old refrigerators died when switched back on, the liquidation of the previous owner's business took longer than anticipated, delaying the new owner's business registration, etc) they are up and running with a new and enticing range of products.

I hear that they come from Bossay sur Claise and he used to work at a well regarded charcuterie in La Roche Posay.

I have sampled their mini pizzas (€1.90 each), on the advice of the old lady in front of me in the shop. She was a repeat customer and said she 'found them very good' ("Je les trouve très bons."). We thought they were good too and enjoyed them for lunch with a salad.

I'm quite intrigued by their very green tomato stuffing mix and will be buying some of that to try once the big summer tomatoes appear at the market.

Charcutiere traiteur means someone who makes and sells cured pork meats, but also does outside catering.

Good for you and for all of Preuilly. We don't have a single charcuterie left in Saint-Aignan. There were three when we came to live here in 2003. But two local butchers have diversified by adding charcuterie to their offerings, and of course we have two supermarkets within five minutes' drive. And there is a charcuterie over in Noyers-sur-Cher.

Yes, I think we have been lucky to have someone buy the business. They are doing a good trade at the moment, but that will be initially while everyone tests out their products. Sadly, no such luck for the restaurant we have lost.

I think it is likely to be parsley and rice based.

I lived in the Chateau du Lion whilst it was under renovation in the early 1970s and got to know the Chaboissons very well. It was quite saddened to think of Preuilly without a charcuterie, and am happy see the storefront so beautifully filled with food again!

The Chaboissons were the charcutiers before the ones that this young couple have bought the business from.
