A View of Paris With Les Invalides

View of Paris from the Eiffel Tower. Photo by Loire Valley Time Travel.

This view of Paris with Les Invalides in the centre was taken from the Eiffel Tower in September 2002. You can see the gilded Eglise du Dome (which houses the tomb of Napoléon I). The Eglise du Dome is part of the Hotel des Invalides, the vast military hospital complex built by Louis XIV and now still a hospital and residence for wounded war veterans, but also housing the Musée de l'Armée (the Army Museum -- a good visit but requires physical and emotional stamina) and offices for the Armed Forces.

Excellent photo. I can recognize for sure a few landmarks in the foreground such as St-François-Xavier, St-Sulpice, St-Germain-des-Prés, the Panthéon, Notre-Dame...and probably the Musée d'Orsay not far from Ste-Clothilde.

Thanks chm. I can manage Notre-Dame and the Panthéon -- all those other churches -- no idea without looking at a map :-)

Saint François Xavier is on the extreme right on a horizontal line from the Dome. Saint Sulpice is on a vertical line above the Dome. What I think is Musée d'Orsay ln the extreme left on a horizontal line just above the Dome. The Musée Rodin is that black patch just behind the Dome.
The church just behind the Dome is Saint Louis des Invalides.
