Rural Airstrip

Photograph Susan Walter. Tour the Loire Valley with a classic car and a private guide.

This is the airstrip on the outskirts of the town were I grew up. When I was a teenager a crop duster operated out of here, but that is a profession that no longer seems to exist. It was notoriously dangerous for the pilots, and controversial in terms of the amount of pesticide spray drift, so I don't think anyone regrets the passing of the crop dusters.

The damage done to our planet - and its population - by the agro-industry and chemical corporations is immeasurable!

Industrial farming is certainly the big issue to be tackled these days.

In Rhodesia we used to have the crops sprayed by plane, the pilot was a lunatic seeing how many electric lines he could fly under!! As to how much wild life got wiped out in those days I guess it was never thought about.
I see NZ are now spraying the whole of N and S island with 1080 to get rid of rodents, how much other damage is it going to do????????
Have a good week Diane

Crop dusters were always notorious for that sort of thing.

NZ uses 1080 to get rid of invasive aliens like possums and rats -- their equivalent of Australia's feral cats in terms of the damage they are doing to the native fauna. The poison isn't sprayed, it's dropped as pellets by helicopter, and only in isolated areas that can't be easily accessed by trappers. Most sensible people support the programme, but acknowledge that is because 1080 is the only alternative at present, and not a nice one. Once a viable alternative exists the practice will change.
