Basque Four-headed Cross

Basque four-headed cross, the lauburu. Pyrenees-Atlantiques, France. Photographed by Susan Walter. Tour the Loire Valley with a classic car and a private guide.

Everywhere in Basque country you will see a four-headed cross symbol called the lauburu. Its origins and meaning are shrouded in mystery but it has been used as a decorative element in the area since the 16th century, and today it has become a symbol of Basque unity.
