Concremiers

Concremiers is a small town of about 650 people and 400 houses on the banks of the Anglin, in the Brenne. We went there recently because we were on the hunt for a nearby castle, and were charmed by the centre of town.  Just about its only claim to fame is that the painter Gustave Courbet spent some time here in the mid-19th century and produced at least one landscape of the area. Here are some photos that we took a couple of weeks ago.

The door inside the church to the belfry, typically very narrow. The carved door surround looks early Renaissance (mid-15th to mid-16th century).

A very Golem like gargoyle on a corner of the church roof.

Side entry to the church. The door surround looks contemporary with the belfry door, in that early Renaissance Italianate style.

Medieval tower with jakes (toilet) next to modern public toilets, Indre, France. Photo by Loire Valley Time Travel.
We were amused by the juxtaposition of the current public toilets directly opposite a medieval jakes (toilet -- suspended over what I can only assume is a later door!)

Deliberately positioned to allow boiling oil to be poured on unwanted door-to-door salesmen

But presumably you have to lull them into a false sense of security by pretending to be interested, to give you time to boil the oil...

Tim and Susan, LOL!

Lovely small town, Susan. I agree on the last photo!

I had never heard of the term "jakes" until now and don't think that if I had noticed it I would have realised it was a toilet!

There is quite an obvious one in the clocktower at Chinon. Check it out next time you visit.

Yes, it seemed a nice small town.

Mwahahahahaha! I can think of worse things that you could have in containers on standby.... none of them associated with people

Exactly. Who is going to waste expensive and impractical oil?
