Pale-headed Rosella

Amongst the pretty parrots you can see in rural and suburban areas of south-east Queensland is the Pale-headed Rosella Platycercus adscitus. They like grass seeds and fruit, so large rural gardens are frequented, as are roadsides. Their natural habitat is open forest and they need hollow trees to nest.

We had so many pretty birds where we lived in the US. Very few here. Rumor has it that a lot were eaten during the war and haven't recovered.....

I think European birds are just dull, certainly compared to Australian birds anyway.

What we heard was that the population decline began when the farmers got their guns back after the war.

Once again, I notice how much more I get out of your photos on the "big screen" than on my phone. The rosella is lovely.

Frankly I think the post war increasing use of insecticides and the lack of food for chicks has a lot more to do with bird population declines.
