A Blue Butterfly in the Pyrenees

Plebejus sp, Haute Pyrenees, France. Photo by Loire Valley Time Travel.

I snapped this shot of a blue butterfly high up in the mountains last year but have never been able to work out exactly which species it is. It is Plebejus sp, and based on the location, must either be a Silver-studded Blue P. argus, or an Idas Blue P. idas.

Who can tell it’s blue when it’s open?

chm: It appears to be quite blue on its upper side, so I assume it is male. But most blue butterflies need to be identified to species level from their underside. Unfortunately with this one I need to see both upper and under to get a better idea of which species it is.
