Re-introducing a Rodent

Last week I posted a photo of a vulture with the comment "there were two things I really wanted to see on our trip to the Pyrenees: marmotts and vultures."

Here's proof I saw both

In 1948 they were reintroduced to the Pyrenees, from where they had disappeared at end of the Pleistocene era (over 10,000 years ago). Since then they have repopulated the area amazing well, but don't bother going looking for them now - they will all have hibernated. It snowed earlier this week in the central pyrenees, so all the marmotts will be snug (we hope) in their burrows.

We always were on the lookout for marmots when we lived in Andorra and walked in the mountains regularly. We often so their holes but the actual marmots were more elusive. Great photo!

Katie: They are quite noisy, so we usually spotted them because they were making their alarm call. This photo was taken from the car.
