A Gateway in Déols

Déols is now virtually a suburb of Chateauroux, but it was once much more important than its now larger neighbour.

You will notice that the title of this post is "A Gateway in Deols". That's because two gateways of the Benedictine Abbey of Our Lady of Déols (founded in 917) still exist. The abbey church was rebuilt about 1150 with seven towers, of which only one remains, on a floorplan larger than the cathedral of Bourges. The existing tower is impressive, the church must have been a real wonder in its day.
