Columbus arrived back in Europe from his voyage of discovery to the Americas in 1493. Within a few years tapestries depicting South American plants, animals and even insects started proliferating. This one hangs in the Chateau of Langeais, and there is another version in the Chateau of Chenonceau. These tapestries demonstrate the great interest in what Columbus had seen and what it all signified. There was a widely held belief that he had rediscovered the Garden of Eden and so wealthy patrons were eager to have their excitement about this represented in the most expensive art form of the time.
