Welcome Back Martins

The House Martins are back from their winter in Africa. They will now go about repairing their mud nests under the eaves on buildings all over Europe. With luck, good weather and lots of flying insects they will raise multiple broods through the summer, often in the very nest they were born in themselves. The photo shows Martin nests on the eastern facade of the Chateau of Chenonceau, part of the largest colony in the Touraine Loire Valley. The Martins take advantage of the insect life emerging from the River Cher and surrounding forests to feed themselves and their young. It is forbidden to damage or disturb the nests whether they are occupied or not.

In France it is said to bring good luck to have martins build their nests on your house.

30 yrs ago we used to say it was bad luck to have martins nesting above my parents glass roofed conservatory. Loads of mud and poop!
