Well! We're on holiday and the drive down was trouble free, despite my worries
of excessive heat, smoke, fires, and traffic.
The smoke was
noticeable when we left home, and by the time we were south of Poitiers we
could smell it as well as see it. Around Bordeaux it was quite thick and
everything had a red tinge and a vague look. Luckily (!) the smoke was
stopping the sun heating the air, and the temperature was mid 20s Celcius most
of the day.
The view from our lunch spot on the quai at Langon, on the Garonne
We arrived in Cauterets an hour earlier than we had allowed for, as our lunch
stop was perfunctory rather than luxurious - it was warm,
sweaty and smokey.
