It didn't take very long on being back in Australia recently for me to observe that people's preferences as far as pet dogs go are very different in Australia and France. I would say that about 50% of the dogs I saw in Australia were 'designer dogs', some sort of poodle cross. And the statistics bear me out. Below is a non-exhaustive list of dog breed popularity rankings for Australia.
The dog treat bar in Coles supermarket, Manly, New South Wales. New since we were last in Australia and unlike anything I've encountered anywhere else.
Dog Breeds Ranked for Popularity in Australia:
1. Cavapoo.
2. Golden Retriever.
3. French Bulldog.
8. Border Collie.
10. Goldendoodle.
11. Australian Kelpie.
13. Spoodle.
At home in France my observation is that about a third of my friends and aquaintances opt for Australian Shepherds (a breed I had never heard of until moving to France, by the way), and if they want combination pet and guard dog they opt for a Belgian Shepherd.
Dog Breeds Ranked for Popularity in France:
1. Berger Australien (Australian Shepherd).
2. Golden Retriever.
3. Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
4. Chien de Berger Belge (Belgian Shepherd).
13. Bouledogue Francais (French Bulldog).
Personally, if I was in the market for a dog, I would be opting for a griffon of some sort (ie a wire haired hunting breed), and it would be coming from the animal shelter. I've a yen for a Porcelaine as well, one of the French hounds, but they are a bit big for our small house. The breed I would be least likely to get is any sort of collie or shepherd dog, or any of the big breeds that dribble.
