Australian Ice-Cream

Alongside Australian coffee (which sells itself as the best in the world but isn't by a long shot), Australian ice-cream is having a moment. The trendiest of ice creams sells itself as either authentic Italian gelato or "frozen custard" - i.e. ice-cream. Goodness knows what the stuff that sells itself as ice-cream is...

We were treated to gelati at Messina in Canberra. I found my vanilla ice cream a bit pasty and underwhelming, and Susan wasn't over impressed with her ice-cream either. Which is disappointing, because they write a good website where they say all the right things. I would have been quite happy with a Magnum.

The "frozen custard" place we visited in Canberra would be great if you were having an 8th birthday party - very loud, enormous technicolour servings - but tasted a bit artificial. Once again, a Magnum eaten in the car park would have sufficed.

In my mind this will always be "Anita Granita"

The best we found was Anita Gelato in Manly (although they would have scored even more points if they had called it Anita Granita). Lovely smooth rich ice-cream without being sickly sweet. The kitchen is visible, and there are tables inside in air conditioned comfort. It's also just close enough to a telephone box to get free wi-fi. It didn't come up short against my expectations, which was a relief on a hot day.
