The Neo-Byzantine Church in Les Ormes

The original church in Les Ormes was commissioned by Martin Pussort in 1655. His heart reposes in the void under the main altar of the current church.

Around 1890 the condition of the old church left a lot to be desired -- a fact that was tragically demonstrated when the warden fell to his death after going through the floor of the belfry. It was clearly time for a new church.
 

The neo-Byzantine style of the new church, consecrated in 1896, caused considerable comment amongst the townsfolk. A round belfry sits on an octagonal base, emerging from a square tower which serves as the narthex (porch).

And if you too are bemused by the neo-Byzantine style -- think the Basilica de Sacré-Coeur in Paris, which was begun in 1875 and consecrated in 1919.
