This bundle of golden threads is the egg sac of a Coastal Golden Orb-Weaver Trichonephila plumipes. I photographed it in coastal heath at Iluka in New South Wales. Very pretty.... there is a spider here that makes small, green versions of this [1cm diam]. I have no idea which spider, or what group.... none of my books have any info on the egg sacs.
Before looking for it, I thought the tree/bush on which stood the spider's egg sac was an Oleander. Then, I found it was a Leucopogon Parviflorus. Right?
LPdlF -- the closest I can think of for here are the pirate spiders Ero spp.
chm -- I don't think so. I think it's probably Coastal Banksia Banksia integrefolia. But my notes don't say what I identified it as at the time.
