Thredbo Ski Resort

Thredbo is Australia's most well known ski resort. It is also popular during the summer with hikers and mountain bikers. It is in the Snowy Mountains, inside the Kosciuszko National Park in the south-east of New South Wales. The permanent population is about 500 people, but in the ski season there are ten times that many people in town.

There are 14 lifts and the longest steepest ski runs in Australia. The town was created in the late 1950s by a consortium of people who had been working in the area on the Snowy Mountain Hydro-Electric Scheme. It looks much like a European resort, reflecting the immigrant backgrounds of those who started the ski industry in their new land.
