Farmers in Switzerland don't have herds, they have carillons.

One of the first things we saw on entering Switzerland was cows wearing bells. We were rather surprised that such a stereotype turned out to be true.

Cows in the Cantal (Auvergne) also are belled like that.

Annette and I found the same thing when we arrived at her sisters home in Altdorf, Switzerland. Although the family home was in a suburban setting there was a paddock and hills in the distance which were occupied by the obligatory dairy cows adorned with bells.
The constant movement of the beasts ensured a steady symphony of dull metallic clunking, always present but never unpleasant.
Exactly our experience.
