The new season's apples are in. I've picked a few from our trees but they'll hold for at least a month on the trees. The local organic orchard, Les Jardins Vergers de la Petite Rabaudière, have a couple of varieties at the market now and they've made some new apple juice.
The mystery apple is on the right.
Tony the Organic Orchardist had a particularly nice crisp sweet apple last Thursday. He says he doesn't know what it is and he only has one tree of it.

There were so many old varieties that were so good; where are they now? Belle de Pontoise, Calville blanche, Calville rouge, Grand Alexandre, Reinette, etc.. in France. Winesap, McIntosh and others in the U.S. Replaced with insipid varieties with very long shelf life?
I remember, as a boy, the bright red so-called pomme du Canada. It was absolutely tasteless; that was the beginning of the slippery slope!
Reine de reinettes and other reinettes are everywhere in France, but almost unknown outside of this country.
Our apples are in too, as Walt posted today. I don't even know what two varieties these are.
