Every town and village in France (and a lot of hamlets) have a war memorial erected to remember those who died in World War One.
After the Second World War, the names of those who died in service; either in the regular army or the resistance, and sometimes the names of people who were taken away and never returned - were added. The memorials are the centrepiece of services on the 11th November (Armistice 1918), a public holiday commemorating the end of WW1) and 8th May (Victoire 1945, a public holiday commemorating the end of WW2).
This particularly handsome example is in the Vienne village of Leigné les Bois, near la Roche Posay
