This is the view of Basilique Notre Dame from in front of our apartment. The basilica is the white building atop the hill
This is the view from the top of the basilica to our apartment (just behind the trees near the bridge, behind the tall steeple).
Yesterday we did a tour of the basilica which involved climbing as far as you can go - in this case the top of the right hand tower. The above photo was taken from about the position I have circled in red.
It was about 300 steps up (and down) but well worth the effort and the 14€ ticket.

Nice vantage point
It is interesting to note that the three largest cities in France are dominated by huge basilicas, Notre-Dame de la Garde, Notre-Dame de Fourvières and Le Sacré-Cœur, in Marseille, Lyon and Paris respectively, and none of them being really worth much, IMHO!
The three of them are second half of the nineteen century new and improved pastiches of the Byzantine style that is called Neo-Byzantine and more or less inspired by the Saint-Front Cathedral in Périgueux. I rest my case!
I should have added that I like Saint-Front because it is simple and, above all, not improved</b.
chm. The one thing you can't accuse the religious mania of the 1870 of is having too much good taste
