We were driving through Veigné on Tuesday when I spotted something I have been looking for for ages, but somehow managed never to see.
The Arbre a Pain is a 300 plus year old chestnut tree in the grounds of
the Chateau de la Championniere, with an enormous trunk 8.5 metres in
circumference. The name comes from times of deep famine, when the chestnuts
were ground for flour.
The chateau grounds are a public park, with plenty of parking and information boards. If you're in the area south of Tours, the park is here

That tree is a wonder of nature. We consult the monumental trees website when we're visiting a new area and try to track them down, but some of course are on private land. Many of the trees we've seen on that list are quite battered looking, but this one looks good.
