Chateau du Verger, Vou

There is a substantial bell at the gate.

 

The Chateau du Verger near Vou is what in French is known as a gentilhommière, a gentleman's residence, in this case really a fortified manor house, composed of a large rectangular main building with several towers. 

The polygonal tower appears to be having some work done.

 

On the north facade, the courtyard side, a distinctive polygonal tower rises, housing a vast spiral staircase giving access to all floors. The Renaissance entrance door is framed by flat pilasters and surmounted by a double moulded lintel with four medallions. A small circular turret, set in a watchtower at the angle between the staircase tower and main block, serves as a staircase to the uppermost floor. At the southwest corner of the house is a round tower whose upper part was dismantled: it was cut diagonally and its parapet walk was removed, while the corbelling of the machicolations was cut flush with the wall.
