Please don't Feed the Pelicans

Australian Pelicans Pelecanus conspicillatus are widespread and locally common. They occur both at the coast and on larger, open, inland bodies of fresh water. These were photographed at Woy Woy, on the coast just north of Sydney.

They are a magnificent sight in the air.
These were photographed from the train going from Canberra to Sydney.

Il est toujours déconseillé de nourrir les animaux dans la nature que ce sont des oiseaux ou des mammifères. !
Les pélicans sont vraiment plaisants à observer près de chaque petit port de pêche où ils attendent patiemment le retour des pêcheurs!

They are pretty with their blue feet. There are a lot of them in California and I am always impressed to see they particularly in flight.

It is the first time I've seen a furry pelican!!

I particularly like the....
"Fishermen's Wharf will NOT replace lost food".... line.

Lucie: they aren't stupid -- much more relaxing to just wait for food to be delivered!

Nadège: you have a different species, but they are very similar to watch.

Tim: a juvenile.

Woy Woy - whose mother lived there.
A simple trivia question, I'm sure....

Leon: it is indeed the only thing anyone ever knows about Woy Woy.

They named a bridge after him at Woy Woy. Disappointingly it just crosses the creek. I really had hopes they would do the man full justice and stop it a metre short of the other side. It's here

Seems like a good plan. Seagulls maybe but I wouldn't want a bird the size of a St. Bernard begging me for food.

Pearl: Emus are even more menacing.

On the Salton Sea there are both brown and white pelicans. They have different ways of fishing. The brown variety dives from the air, while the white ones just open their beak in the water.

chm: I didn't know that -- interesting!
