Interestingly, I was convinced that this street was called "Ruelle du Petit Ha-Ha". This makes me think that somewhere around Preuilly-sur-Claise there is a street with just such a name.
Maybe that was what the ha-ha was for - the congregation couldn't escape the sermon? What I really want to know is how you pronounce ha-ha in French - I assume uh-uh, but it seems so clumsy.

It's the combination that makes this irresistible: "Corner of Sermon St and Ha-Ha Alley". All it needs is for someone to write the novel...

Presumably a quite short and crisp ah-ah, much as you would use to warn a child about something - like trying to escape from a sermon...
